MCA Certified Roofing Panels

Aggressive and Exacting Testing

With hundreds of metal roofing products available today, the Metal Construction Association (MCA) developed its Certified Panel Program to aid homeowners in identifying products of the highest quality. Valley Metal Roofing Systems is proud to be one of only a few manufacturers to achieve this coveted stamp of approval. Valley Metal Roofing Systems have passed aggressive and exacting testing to ensure its quality will withstand the test of time and provide a lifetime of protection for your home. Passing ASTM tests 4145, B117, D2244, and others, the finish and substrate have proven to resist the hail, acid rain, humidity, and salt spray that

compromise the performance of inferior roofing systems.

Going Above & Beyond Peace of Mind

Valley Metal Roofing manufacturers our unique residential Roofing systems from aluminum that has been coated before they receive it for processing through their stamping and roll forming operations. The metal has been coated in a carefully controlled process called roll coating (or “coil coating”) while it is still in coil form. The coating process includes cleaning the metal, applying chemicals to prepare the metal for paint adhesion, and then applying the primer and baking it on followed by application of the top coat and baking it on. Some of our premium colors have additional coats for extra decoration and protection. The coatings are baked at around 500 degrees and the process occurs at about 175 feet per minute (much slower than what some companies paint at, in order to help ensure quality). To further ensure quality, they are present for about 40% of all coating runs, and test every coil in their own lab before forming. Most other metal roofing manufacturers never attend a paint run, nor do they test every coil.

Metal Roofing

Procedure

Rustic Shingle was applied to an 8×10 ft. plywood deck constructed to include a valley. All testing was done with the deck positioned at a 2:12 slope (recommended minimum pitch is 3:12). This deck was then subjected to varieties of wind and wind-driven rain, culminating in the final test segment of 110 m.p.h. winds and simulated 8.8″ per/hour rainfall.

Results

Results were reported for each of four segments of the test, with winds at 35, 70, 90, and 110 miles per hour,

respectively, each with a 8.8″ per hour simulated rainfall. Results for each segment of the test were identical:
“No lift or movement of any components occurred. No water intrusion occurred.”

Metal Roofing

Procedure

A simulated roof and attic was divided into two halves: one roofed with ordinary asphalt roofing, the other with Rustic Shingle. Temperature was monitored over a period of several weeks.

Results

The result of the fire testing is that Rustic Shingle aluminum shakes are listed by I.C.B.O. for Class A, B, or C, fire ratings, depending on the underlayment used in conjunction with the shakes. I.C.B.O. fire ratings are recognized as a national standard for roofing fire safety.

Procedure

Simulated roof deck was constructed of plywood at a 5:12 slope. The deck was roofed with Rustic Shingle as specified by the manufacturer’s instructions. A well-ignited Class A burning brand (burning block of wood) was placed on the deck.

Procedure

A solution of 10% sulphuric acid was deposited on the coated surface of all test samples, which included Rustic Shingle in its standard Kynar colours and the Matte Finish Series colours. This acid solution was left under a watch glass (to prevent evaporation) for 12 hours.

Results

No effect. On both 50% Kynar and 70% Kynar formulations of Rustic Shingle coatings, the acid had no effect on the appearance, performance or integrity of the finish. This result was as expected since the coating manufacturer offers an identical warranty on both the 50% and 70% Kynar formulations

Procedure

A 3 by 3 foot base was constructed with the Rustic Shingle system applied. Stainless steel balls of varying sizes were then dropped from increasing heights, up to a 2 inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet.

Results

Examination at 5X magnification revealed: “No evidence of tearing, fracturing, cracking, splitting, rupture, crazing or other evidence of opening in the roof covering system”
